Compressor expander not working ?

Hi ,
How to reproduce : listen for example to Ravel's bolero which starts so low that you can barely hear the music.
I tried playing with the compander settings and I don't hear any change.
Audacious for example has an audio compressor effect and a background music effect whitch both work very well on the aforementioned track.
Maybe i missed something ?
I really like the Jamesdsp equalizer.
