Footnote numbers now take up half a column when source is in RST #659

I recently upgraded from Elegant 1.3 to 5.3. When footnotes are typeset in html, the footnote number now takes up half a column. See the restructured text code fragment below and a screen shot of the html output. I do not know if this footnote typesetting is a bug or if you intended this behavior. I think the footnote number should be just a few characters wide, like before. Can you suggest a way to recover the prior behavior?

I'm using 'next' branch and in markdown I get them like this:

It works fine on both for HTML, but for RST it shows similar setup like you've

With RST:

I've manually reverted my local copy to 1.3:

As reference, with version 3..1 t here was already this new behavior:
