It's not clear that "dimensionOrder" does not apply to metrics

It is not clear from the OrderByColumnSpec documentation on the LimitSpec page that while the "dimension" field is used to choose either a dimension or metric to sort by, the "dimensionOrder" field is only applied to dimensions, and metrics/aggregations will use their own internal sorting method.

Should it apply to metrics / post-aggs? (in other words is this a documentation problem or a code problem?)

That is a great question.... I don't know. I assumed it was a documentation issue at a minimum.
