139.1 So, for Robsten specifically, you know, clients are going to put out releases with the huge TTD value in the coming days. If you've already downloaded a client's release that includes Robsten TTD support for a value like the one we hit yesterday, you must upgrade your TTD value to the new, new one. We'll make an announcement about the new Robsten clients early next week, which will have this pretty high TTV hard-coded in. And then, once Bellatrix has occurred, on June 2nd, we'll choose, I guess, a realistic TTD number, that will confirm on June 3rd, we'll probably choose that to happen, like, in theory, 10 or so days later, but then we'll try and add some hash rate for it to occur around June 8th. But those are very rough targets. We cannot absolutely guarantee it. 36.34
139.2 Tim - Launch of the Sepolia beacon chain should happen next week, as it just requires some coordination 43.14
139.3 I think it's pretty clear from the EL teams that we don't want this to be a requirement for the merge, especially if CL can kind of hack it by calling every single block by hash. But, yes, having some comments on the spec would be helpful. Yes, the general API is understandable. However, we do not intend to implement this before the merge. 1.03.43

  • I was thinking that I'm on suppose Leo, maybe we should go ahead and, just rent some hash rate to bump the hash rate up to a point where we would, it would be easier to estimate TTD and we wouldn't be so susceptible to, you know, TTD in this way.

  • Yes. But we don't know how much any attacker would like to spend and is ready to just spent on it. I don't know. It's a, if it's like an attacker that us, the hardware, because it's basically electricity, right?

I think that the easiest ways to have the procedure that we have discussed, I mean, it's like, yeah, kind of it's in solution, but we still have a risk to hit the day before. the notes are upgraded with, with the real TGB, right. Then now it's nodes of upgraded and then we can accelerate the hash rate if we can increase the hash rate, if it's not enough to get down in the day that we expect it's there, the network.

  • I'm actually more interested in just, I suspect that if we did a legitimate auction, we would still make enough to fund the EIP process. And I think it would be good opportunity to show the ecosystem what legitimate auction. That's not just someone marketing actually looks like, oh, a pretty good job there. They're just really legit.

We are live, for All Core Devs number 139. we have plenty of merge things to disco today. And if there's any time left over, we have two quick updates on an EIP that people wanted to present. first thing, I guess is the Ropsten TTD issue that we saw yesterday. does anyone want to give a quick recap? I kind of wrote a recap, but if anyone else wants to just run through what happened, that would be, that'd be great.

  • Okay. Okay. I guess I'll read from my document, but high level. what we saw is, the Ropsten hash rate go up like 20, 30 X overnight. we always kind of knew this could happen, but previously did not mess with Ropsten as much. and this kind of led, the network to hit the terminal difficulty for emerge before the beacon chain for Ropsten was even alive. So Genesis is scheduled for May 30th, I believe. and, and this guy had just put things in a weird spot where like validators were, or sorry, upgraded nodes got into thoughts that TTD had been hit, but, the beacon chain not exist yet. and, and, the amount of like money that it costs to raise the hash, Don Ropsten is quite trivial. So, you know, even if we raise the TTD, like twice, three times 10 X, it's quite possible that somebody might just mind enough, might just invest enough to mess with that number as well.and so basically in order to prevent, that we've kind of moved to, a solution where, we override the TTD to an incredibly large number, have the beacon chain GoLive have Bellatrix happened on the beacon chain and then, override the DTV again to a number that we expect to happen fairly soon. And so that means that like up to, up to Bellatrix being activated,it's basically impossible that we would hit the TTD. The number we chose was about twice the total difficulty on the theater main net, which on Ropsten's hash rate would take about 250 years to hit. so we're safe there, but then yeah, what's Bellatrix is hit.the, the plan is to choose another TTB, which expected to happen soon. And, upgrade this again. I guess just for people listening, you know, that this can't really happen on maintenance and the reason is that for this to happen, you know, well, this was caused because the beacon chain was basically not live yet.And because of how hard it is to predict, hash rate that's, that's how variable it is obviously on may not be contained as life. so that's not a problem. but then there's still this potential problem of like, what if PTD was hit before the Bellatrix upgrade was live on the beacon chain.and they're the reasoning is, well, we can, we can predict hash rates, you know,fairly well on my neck. And most likely to not pass rates would be going down rather than up, because we approached emerge. so the odds that like a ton of hash rate would join the network and the forced us to hit TTD much earlier than expected. This is quite low. and depending on like, you know, like basically if we saw hash rate two X overnight on main maintenance, it means there's now enough new hash rates to conduct the 51% attack and like proof of work security guarantees.We can not by that point. So we can have like pretty reasonable bounds on the TTD, on, on main net. and the worst case it's usually like, it just happens later than we would expect. but yeah, for test nets, given that like Gordy is obviously on proof of work or sorry, Ropsten is, is obviously a proof of work and it's easy to manipulate say what's the Sepolia. It seems like what makes the most sense is just saying this very high number that Bellatrix happen and then, and then send it to another TTB that that's much slower.

  • So yeah, one question I have is why do we need the TTD? And Bellatrix why not just make the electrics, if like, if we don't specify a TTD for Bellatrix, then we will look at the look at the TTD from, from, from the or the TDF from the one chain and just ignore it because we don't have a TTD set. And so, I'm a bit confused to why we need to set the TTD for Bellatrix to happen and why we just schedule Bellatrix and then set the GTD.

Mikhail Kalinin

  • Do you mean that, why do we need to do, to be a part of cl clients binary? Or do you mean that why do we need to set to D like to, to like deploy a real, to, to deal within the ballot treats?The second.

  • Yeah.Why, why do we have it have to have it in one release, and I guess we don't,

  • I'm gonna throw out an answer, in the spirit of the internet and saying something wrong, someone will correct me. I believe the reason is that the clients concerns of clients as currently written, Bellatrix kind of, they expect a TTD to be available when with Bellatrix like, they need something for that value. They need to put something in there, because they have a constant somewhere in their code and they need to set it to something. And so we need some number to be in, in that spot when Bellatrix goes live over the Bellatrix clients are released, I should say, that number can be giant. It can be, you know, you hit max, that's fine. but it needs to be something. And that's why, when we talk about, we need to TTD for debt filled tricks, I believe that is the reason, that someone can correct me.

  • Yes. But as I understand what Maris was saying, as that we can put a placeholder then, for educated, well, you predict a large number and then wait for village bricks to happen. Then like cots release another, another, like series of releases clients with the Realty to the, is that what you mean? Marius?

  • Yes. Or like the easiest way and the way I would, like, I would have thought that clients would have implemented it as if we, if we don't specify a TTD with Bellatrix, then the Bellatrix folk will update the, make the consensus changes, but not, verify the, the, the TD from the,from the execution layer chain, against, against what we don't have.So

  • I guess, given that all the testing of like the past year has happened with TTB on Bellatrix, it's probably much safer, like, and that achieve the same outcome. They just have like a really high value rather than try and change the code now. And have it say, like, if there's nothing do this, is there, like, I, I'm curious to hear just a couple of cl folks on the call, like, I don't, do you feel more comfortable with one way or the other?

  • I think it's like, I actually think it's fine to set it to some really high number. but I'm just like, I think it's a bad design decision to, that has been done previously and we can like, doesn't make sense to turn it around now.It's just for,

  • I think it's like not a big deal now. I mean, we can set it to like where a lot of Shaba, but yeah, this is what we're going to do with, on support on the main net, like, what are we going to do with Paula is to set the real ticket the after bill and fix happens. Right.but yeah, for the main nets, I'm not sure about that.That's like, do we want to have to release this?

And, and the reason, the reason for that, for those listening, who don't fall discord is that having your test nets follow the exact same pattern as your production network is very valuable. it also impacts third parties. So third parties who want to be able to follow the Sepolia upgrade, and they set up the run to set up their scripts. And if your institution, you may have a big infrastructure that you need to go through and you have a checklist and all of these things, having that be exactly the same for test nets and mainnet with the only difference being like, you know, whether it runs on client a or client or host air host to be, it was very valuable for those, those people. And so I think it is important that we should follow the exact same procedure for the mainnet launch as first fully launch. Even if it feels kind of unnecessary on main net due to difficulty be much harder to, to play with.

  • I just wanted to ask, about how much time would it take to upgrade at the second time? Do we expect the, like the same time to, to upgrade to users upgrading their notes in both cases? So, okay.

  • Like, can someone explain like really quickly what's in Bellatrix and why should we not just schedule it right now with a really high TG and then set the TTD once?Is that what you're asking? Yeah.

Tim Beiko I guess for the same reason that we can't schedule the merge, I assume there's still some testing,

  • I'd be curious to hear from cl clients here, but it does feel like the, the code that like cl clients have today is not what they expect to have on mainnet. And I don't know what, like the diff is here, but yeah.I see some prism Taikoo folks,

I think, I mean, I, I think we are basically production ready and could, could go, but, if we are scheduling it a month out, then you know, that that would be fine, but yet it all depends on dates. And so if it's like realistic that like Bellatrix could be scheduled that, you know, call it a month or two and give us some time to then, yeah. Then, then make it really easy to set the TTD. that's probably a discussion worth having a, the cl call next week. but yeah, if I think that would, because the reason.That's like Bellatrix could be scheduled that, you know, call it a month or two and give us some time to then, yeah. Then, then make it really easy to set the DDB. that's probably a discussion worth having on the cl call next week. but yeah, if I think that would, because th th and the reason, I guess, take a step back is I think the big, the biggest downside I can see with this approach of two releases is just that, you're yeah, you're just kind of waiting around for a while at the end, right? Like where you basically upgrade your client, the Bellatrix, you know, invalid Trix happens, but kind of nothing happens on the networks because Bellatrix is just waiting. and then, and then you have to like, run through this whole upgrade cycle again. And if we're just sitting around waiting, it's basically just a waste of time, but if we can, if we can save that, I think that's the biggest downside that, that there isn't this approach.

Micah Zoltu

  • If all, if all the clients have ATTD override conflicts setting, I would be personally comfortable with, having a fairly short time window between the TTD announcement and the TTD going live, because anyone who can't, you know, quickly upgrade their client, because they need to do some, some additional testing or whatever, you can simply just do it to a TTD over instead, like, you don't actually need to do a full upgrade if you don't want there's two options, TDD override, or download a client that has the TTD baked in, and both of them are reliable, and you can choose which one you want, but that makes me more comfortable that we don't need to have the usual, you know, one month between scheduling the, the hard fork and then the hardfork Catherine, because, you know, clients are already out there, they've been out there for two weeks already. We can just say in two weeks is when we're scheduling,

  • Right.This just a suit. Yeah. This assumes that the ELL clients are already up there, which like in this case where we scheduled Bellatrix already might not be true,

  • I guess.I guess what I'm saying is I think the time between the ELL, all the clients being released with the TTD hard-coded to a giant number and the time between the merge, that's the time period that betters that the choosing the TTD, you know, it does need to be some amount of time before the merge, but I don't think it needs to be the usual, like one month before.

  • No, I, yeah, I, I would agree there. I'm curious if anyone disagrees with that. Okay. And I guess based on that, this could also be like different for testsnet and mainnets. so give been that for like, we've agreed that we've basically agreed to a TTD of, I think it's 10th of the 32, if, if, if I'm right, but 10 to do something, which is about twice, what's the number on main net? clients, I think are the average pieces either today or Monday with this new value. and, and we're going to publish those like early next week. and then Bellatrix is expected to hit on June 3rd. that, that the 23 is a number.So Bellatrix is expected to hit next, next Friday on June 3rd. And because it's a beacon chain, for they happen at an actual timestamp, so it's usually quite accurate. so that means like the quickest we could choose this new TTD value is like next Friday on, on the June 3rd. how long after, you know, and then I expect we either need new client releases or not. Like we can also just tell users that run the TTD override flag. so like early in the week after, like around June six or seventh, we can probably have a blog post up with this announcement. how long after that, do we want to wait until TTD happens on Robson? Because the original plan was June 8th and obviously seems incredibly close, was to have like a blog post on June 7th and heading the on June 8th. what are people's thoughts about like that delay between, yeah, basically having chosen the TTB for Robson post Bellatrix and, having it actually hits the network.

  • The 8 0 8,So that, so that means we might be in the world that is like a blog post announcements coming up. I'm like the seventh, like all the clients are set already there, but then the four happens, the TTD has hit on Robson like 24 hours later.

  • Wait, we don't, am I correct understanding that we don't expect clients to be ready until the seventh?

Tim Beiko

  • No. Sorry. So, actually, no, that's not true. We can be ready quicker than that. So I think what we can do,is I'm not sure what time Bellatrix is scheduled for on, on the third, on, on Friday the third, but basically as soon as Bellatrix has happened, we can pitch a TTD value. And maybe even like before, like obviously if we know that Bellatrix is going to happen in three hours, then we pick up TTD value. That's like in three days or four days. and, and we can also pick the value that's like in Peck days and then add a hash rates to make that happen quicker. so like on the third, we can probably have like agreements on a value and then you don't need to update ELL clients. They can all just pass it at TTD override, flag it.and I suspect those just like the time for us to decide, to teach you the value and then like, kind of announced that the community and whatnot, it means it probably happens on like the Monday that people get aware of it. and that's, and I guess we can make it quicker if we don't wait for clients to be, clients are obviously free to then release versions and like advertise them to your users, but we can have like a kind of an announcement that just focused on the flags, would a note that, you know, that maybe your client will have a,Reese Virgin out. so that means basically by Monday, you can expect like the TTD is like known and communicated, and then you kind of have 48 ish hours before the four kits on Roxanne.

  • I think it's important for those listening in, to understand that we do not have fine grain control over when the merge happens. Exactly like in terms of timestamps. And this is very, very true on test nets and it is somewhat true on maintenance. normally when we schedule our forks, we can get pretty close to where we want them to be. Like we shoot for a certain time of day with the merge. Everybody should be prepared for Teslas and may not that we may get the day wrong. and for T test tests, we may get the week wrong as we saw with Robson, right? We got it wrong by like several weeks. And with maiden that I think being off by days is not unreasonable. And so all users should be prepared for that. Like when we, when we talk about scheduling things for the eighth or scheduling things for, you know, this date or that date, users need to be aware,these are best guesses for us, we're trying our best, but the way things are designed, we don't actually have control.I mean, it's a censorship resistant system that we don't actually control. We only make suggestions and the system does what it does.

Tim Beiko

  • Right. And, and in practice, what this means is like, say we choose something on the third, which we expect to be even, you know, like on the 13th and we can then have Ash power to like, reach it a bit quicker. there is still a world where somebody like puts a hundred extra amounts of pass rate on, on Robson and it ends up coming over the weekend. Right.like I don't think there's anything you can realistically do to prevent that. so yeah, there's on Robson and this will also be true on civility. Yeah. There's like always a chance that like, as soon as we pick the TTD value,somebody shows up and we hit it like hours instead of days later, just because the cost is so low to mine on those.

So we can either set it a few hours before Bellatrix or a few hours after. but like probably around this time on the third, because this is when people are like generally online. and we, we might also like, there's a consensus. They are called on the second. So I think, I think on the second that,we can maybe have like candidates TTDs and like, you know, that they assume that things are stable and then assuming like, nothing goes crazy before Bellatrix we can, we could probably reuse just one of those candidates. yeah.

  • Okay. Okay. So that means it's like this right now is like a 2:00 PM UTC. So that mean the is happening like quite late, you know, it's happening in like six hours from now. I still think we can probably send it TTD value like around this time, but it does become a bit more risky. That's like someone could just mind a bunch and, I, I don't know how much it would cost to like bring something that's like two weeks out to happen. And my guest in six hours basically. So there's a question in the chat, like, why can't we keep it really high and reduce it the day before? It's basically, it's like the lag between, we need to communicate this, this number to people. Like we can't just like choose, I mean, in a perfect, like if we control the everything over to network, we could literally choose a DVD and having to make 20 minutes later. And it would have really high precision, but it's like, how much time did we give people to like, look at their clients,announcements, read the blog posts.and so it feels like the, on the order of a couple of days is like the, the minimum and given this as a Testnet, I think for my nets would probably want something even even longer,assuming we need to go that route, but, yeah.

So that like, from an end users perspective, sending your transactions, like your transaction ends up on the Ropsten for good steak for,only, you know, even if it's only been like a few days, but, I don't, like, I will have some people standing on the wrong side for ups then. Cause like they missed the announcement. I don't know.I don't know how much more we can do for that then like how valuable it is. Like if you're just still running on your Ropsten proof of work for, cause you didn't read the memo until two weeks later, like how, how bad that is basically. yeah, I don't know that people have thoughts on that.

And, ELL is, it is optional for ELL clients to support by wrench requests. and these wire requests is,about to leverage the leading air storage's, which are,and,and make this kind of optimal queries, over linear searches, which is not the case where a lot is by hash. And if, yeah, if, if by ranch is not supported, there is a error code. you know, Ms. PR and cl should fall back by hash, which,which is basically,called bodies by root. So the last thing I had on the merge, Fred's was basically following up on the difficulty bomb, but, so, I checked earlier this week and I think our average block times are like at 13.7 ish, seconds.there was an update that like TJ Rush's chart posted a couple of days ago, which shows that like clearly, you know, there is seven packs from the bomb it's still kind of quite mild. but, obviously these states kind of get,exponentially worse every,about a hundred thousand blocks. and I think last, yeah. So there is like a, another prediction on this, on this thread, which roughly targets that like around August is when we would hit 20, this check-in blocks,that July, we would probably like second half of July, we would be around like 18 ish seconds.And like second half of June, the first half of July, we'd probably be around like 16 and a half second blocks. and then, like very late August, early September, we'd be back to like 25 plus second blocks. I know there was like some conversation on the discord about this, this week. I know Thomas, you had to try about this on Twitter yesterday. but I'm curious to just hear from different time teams generally. Like where do people stand regarding the bomb? yeah, Thomas, you have your hand up, so go for it.

  • Hey team.So I feel a bit weird doing these like sharding, discussion after we very important like merge thing.But anyway, since,I'm supposed to talk about the EIP, I'll give it like a very sort of update. the idea is that we want to do at some point after the merge happens. we are gonna introduce blobs into transactions with the bank sharding. we go through reports by Peter, I think in Amsterdam that, the current approach of like verifying the blobs and the commitments and the transactions is pretty slow in terms like, you know, when you get a transaction and the mental, it, it's pretty slow to verify, and this might cause problems like POS and stuff. So, we are at PR which, makes this process of verifying,product dunk, sharding transactions,extremely much faster by,introducing case KCGS proofs,because before,like we were using KCGS just for building commitments for the roll-ups and stuff,we were not using case proofs anywhere in it.So by using case with KCGS proofs, we're able to like verify transactions much, much faster, like from 14 milliseconds per transactions, to like 2.5 milliseconds and the same for blobs. I'm not going to go into the math of how this works. I tried to write a pretty comprehensive how to on the PR, that requires a bit of knowledge about KCGS, but not too much.and yeah, this is like the summary.let me know if you have questions and maybe we can discuss it in the next day.Cindy,I don't want to take more of your time. So the summary is that the implementation of P 2537 and is actuary completed,it's in the code base right now.It's actually only the pending activation of this functionality.And,it's, it's not really that hard. Jamie Lokier: In the hours/days between publishing the Ropsten TTD and it being reached, are we confident enough of the nodes running on Ropsten will switch their configuration in time to prevent a long-running PoW fork of many nodes? Put another way, are enough of the Ropsten-running people are "involved" enough to keep up to date? Motivation: I’ve been running 3 Ropsten nodes for about a year, and I'm not sure I’m the sort of person who would be that on top of the switch in 2 days. Doubt I'm unique.

Zuerlein: a short delay isn't a big problem. scam forks won't have the economic value or incentives of the main chain. we need to deliver the merge and should do so under a stable and predictable blocktime for TTD

pari: Let's not forget that DevCon is still planned for October. Typically conferences tend to be a sinkhole in terms of async communication and we’d be better off delaying it to just before devcon or far after.
Jamie Lokier: 2 months would be enough, perhaps the minimum, to allow the conversations about the bomb to stop for a while and other things to have breathing room in the call. 3-4 months feels more effective to me wrt focus on other things but I see the arguments against it for community-coordination optics reasons.
