This would be useful with other package-related tooling, i.e. so that they appear in subsequent downgrade invocations. I wonder if it might even make a better default.

Hello @pbrisbin.

I thougt that you meant keeping the packages (.pkg.tar.xz) in the directory defined by the CacheDir option in /etc/pacman.conf (by default /var/cache/pacman/pkg/) and I started implementing this. Then I found out that this directory is owned by root. I suppose you didn't mean that.

Can you please give me more info? I'm interesting in contributing.

That is indeed what I meant. The fact that it is root-owned means this feature would have some complexity, for example downloading to /tmp and then sudo mv-ing later (as just one option).

I've created #68 but I failed to test it.

I'd be glad if you could give any suggestion on what to look for.
